The following is a video that represents Sports Ethics in action. Please view the video and respond on the following:

What would you do in the situation presented?

Do you think that this type of situation does happen and the outcome of the video happens as well? Or, Why do you think that the outcome may be false in real life situations?

Week 2: A couple of videos to reflect on for this Week’s topic

Hi Class,

In conjunction with what we have and are learning thus far I have a couple of situations for you below.

In the two videos below are a couple of instances where Ethics in the field of play are questioned.

In the first video you are watching A soccer match between France and Ireland for a spot in the world cup South Africa 2010. What happens is a hand ball on a game winning and spot clinching goal. A hand ball in soccer is a rule violation that in turn gives the ball to the non violating team. In this case, it would have been Ireland receiving the ball after this such action and the goal would not have counted. Please share your thoughts on the following questions.

How should the player react to his action?

Should there be a rule change to place a referee assistant behind the goal for instances such as this to be spotted and addressed?

Should a challenge system or video replay such as in hockey be used for these types of situations?

In this video you are watching a clip of a game between the Chicago Bulls and The Toronto Raptors In this situation you see Jarrett Jack of the Raptors stop in the middle of play and start tying his shoe. Now the ball is still live and in play. As you can see the Bulls wait for Jarrett Jack to finish and continue play.

How would you react to such a situation on both sides of the ball?

What type of ethical dilemma is displayed here?

December 7, 2009

Toronto's Jarrett Jack gave new meaning to the stop-and-go offense during the Raptors' 110-78 victory over the Chicago Bulls on Saturday.
With a big lead in the final seconds of the third quarter, Jack decided to tie his shoe while holding onto the ball during live play. Even worse, the guy guarding him, Chicago's Luol Deng, doesn't even attempt to challenge for the ball.

Week 2: A couple of more videos to reflect on for this Week’s topic

Hi Class,

Last week we learned of the ethos of the game and how rules are made for sport to be fair and fun for all involved. However, many times rules are changed either for the better or worse of the sport.
Rule changes can become ethical dilemmas or situations of ethical reasoning’s.

In the following videos please watch and think about:

How you would react to the rule change being discussed?

Is there an ethical issue being violated or pushed to its limit with the rule change?

Does this rule change create a change in ethos of the game for the better or worse of those involved in the sport in question?

I look forward to your responses.

Miguel

Week 3: Videos for this week's topic

Hi Class,

Please watch the following videos. While watching the videos think of the following;

How would you react if you are the coach of the player or players committing the action of assault?

Do you feel that the comments of the broadcasters in their video are correct? Why /Why not?

Do you feel that the comments made in the broadcast of the game are correct or in line with the ethos of the game? Why /Why not?

How could these types of situation be avoided or what post game strategy would you implement to avoid these types of situations from happening?

Week 7: Video on Energy Drinks

Hi class,

Below is a video on a very interesting and new subject to enter the Sports realm as all Sports and its athletes at every level are becoming bigger, stronger, and faster at all levels. Please view the video and think about the following:

What, if any, moral or ethical issues are at hand in the video?

What are your initial thoughts on what they would like to impose or put into law for the issue at hand?

Since this is geared mainly towards High School and below, how would you handle this from the standpoint of your career aspiration?

For example, if you are the coach how would you handle this or if you are a front office employee and your athletes want to endorse such a product knowing it is geared towards the youth how would you handle this, and etc.? Just a couple of ways to think about this topic.

Please feel free to share your thoughts.

Miguel
